Indonesia is recognized as the biggest archipelago in this world. Well, the country consists of thousands of islands. For tourists, Indonesia is a great place for a vacation. Near to Sumatra Island, there is Belitung Island. The name derives from a sea creature. It is Belitong (a sea snail). In the past, the island was called Billiton. It is located in the east part of Sumatra Island. It is surrounded by Karimata and Gaspar Straits. The island is famous for its white pepper. Today, it also becomes a top tourist destination.

About Belitung Island

 The island is famous for its culture and tourism. Most of the local people live in the coastal area. Thus, they are quite familiar with the sea. Not to mention they take advantage of the richness of marine life. Mostly, people eat seafood on a daily basis. That means most of them work as a fisherman. Belitung is rich in marine sources, after all. Apart from that, the island is also famous for its tin. The industry tin mines have been there since the first invasion of the Dutch.

 

Visiting Belitung Island Attractions

 The most famous tourist spot is Tanjung Tinggi Beach. It is situated in the north part of the island. You can reach it from Tanjung Pandan by car. The distance is about 38 km. The beach has stunning sea water, white sand, and massive granite. The waves are calm so you can safely swim here. Near to the beach, you may find some local restaurants. They sell numerous types of seafood. The beach is suitable both for water sports and eating local foods.

Next, there is Lengkuas Island. It is located in the north of Belitung Island. It only takes about 30 minutes from the main island. You can use a speedboat to cross the sea. A famous landmark of Lengkuas Island is the lighthouse. It is enacted in the midst of the island. Once you reach the top of the lighthouse, you can witness the scenery around the island. Next, you need to visit Berahu Hill. It is situated near to Tanjung Tinggi. It takes much energy to climb the stairs, though.

Kaolin Lake also becomes one of the best attractions in Belitung Island. Most of the visitors want to take some beautiful pictures around here. The lake features beautiful water and solemn atmosphere. Some people say it is similar to that of Bandung’s White Crater. Another interesting tourist spot is the Kata Museum. It is the first literature museum of the country. This is the home of Andrea Hirata’s work. He is a famous novelist, who was born in Belitung.

 

How to Get to Belitung Island

 The easiest way to reach the island is by air. The destination is Hanandjoeddin Airport in Tanjung Pandan. There are different types of airlines to use. Usually, the flight comes from Palembang, Jakarta, and Pangkal Pinang. In the weekends and holidays, the cost of the ticket may increase significantly. Once you have reached Belitung Island, you can either rent a car or ride a public vehicle. The routes can be confusing sometimes. In this case, you may consider hiring a tour guide.
